The Magic5 Custom Goggles: A Game-Changer for Swimmers

In the world of swimming, gear can make all the difference. Whether you’re a competitive athlete, a masters swimmer, or someone who loves the thrill of open water races, the right equipment can elevate your performance. One piece of gear that has revolutionized the swimming experience for many, including myself, is the Magic5 custom goggles. As a competitive masters swimmer and a former age-group and college swimmer, I have tried almost every goggle on the market, but nothing compares to the precision and comfort of Magic5. Since making the switch from Swedish goggles, which were my go-to throughout my earlier swimming career, I haven’t looked back.

Why Custom Goggles Matter

The most significant advantage of Magic5 goggles is that they are completely custom-made to fit your face. Unlike traditional one-size-fits-all goggles, Magic5 uses advanced technology to scan your facial structure and design a goggle that fits perfectly. This means no more leaks, no more uncomfortable pressure points, and no more adjusting your goggles mid-race. For a swimmer, this level of comfort and reliability can translate into better focus and improved performance.

For those new to custom goggles, it’s important to understand that a perfect fit isn’t just about comfort—though that’s a significant benefit. A well-fitted goggle reduces drag in the water and ensures a secure fit during dives, turns, and even long-distance swims. For competitive swimmers like myself, every millisecond counts, and Magic5 has been a game-changer in this regard.

My Experience with Magic5

As someone who has been deeply involved in the sport for years, both as a competitor and as a strength and conditioning coach, I can attest to the difference these goggles make. After years of wearing Swedish goggles—known for their minimalistic design and tight fit—I was skeptical about switching. However, the precision and comfort that Magic5 offered quickly won me over. The ability to customize the fit exactly to my facial features meant that the usual issues I had with traditional goggles, such as pressure on the eye sockets and occasional leaks, were no longer a problem.

Given my extensive background in strength and conditioning, I understand the importance of having the right equipment to support athletic performance. The same way I carefully select my workout gear and swim equipment, I apply that same standard to my goggles. Magic5 goggles have not only enhanced my performance but also made my training sessions more enjoyable, allowing me to focus entirely on my technique and stamina without worrying about discomfort or distractions.

Training with Magic5 Goggles

As a strength and conditioning coach, I emphasize the importance of consistency and comfort in training. Whether I’m preparing for a masters meet or an open water swim, having the right goggles is as crucial as the training itself. Magic5 goggles allow me to execute long sets, speed work, and technique drills without any discomfort, which is vital for maintaining focus and performance.

Here’s an example of how I incorporate Magic5 goggles into my training routine:

Warm-Up: 400 meters easy freestyle. Work in some different breathing patterns and bursts of speed to ensure the goggles are seated comfortably. They should fit snug enough to be sealed, but not to tight they’re uncomfortable. They do not need to be pressed to seal, and should just sit flush to your eyes.

• 10x50 freestyle build up. Begin long and slow with two beat kick. Gradually, increase your effort and speed by both increasing how hard you pull and kick, and your pull and kick tempo. Rest :20.

Drill Set: 20 x 25 meters sculling using finger paddles, snorkel, and buoy emphasizing hold on the water with your paddles and forearms, and a taught body line.

Main Set: 10 x 200 meters freestyle at goal pace with 20 seconds rest, focusing on maintaining a streamlined position and reducing drag with the custom fit of the goggles. Stay low when you breathe, keeping one goggle in the water and one out. Look down and slightly forward between breaths.

Cool Down: 400 meters easy swim. focusing on relaxed breathing and long strokes. Backstroke every 3 lengths.
